How to Install Floating Shelves in a Bedroom
Floating shelves transform blank bedroom walls into functional storage or display space without the visual clutter of bulky brackets. When executed correctly, they appear to emerge seamlessly from the wall, providing a clean, minimalist aesthetic that works in any decor style. Success in this project hinges entirely on two things: finding the wall studs and ensuring perfect level alignment. If you rush the layout or skip the studs, you end up with sagging shelves and damaged drywall. Take your time with the measurements—the eye notices even a fraction of an inch of slope.
- Find the studs first. Use a stud finder to locate the framing behind your drywall and mark the center of each stud with a pencil. Verify the stud locations by checking for consistent spacing, typically 16 inches apart.
- Mark your height line. Determine the desired height for the shelf and use a level to draw a light horizontal line across the wall at that position. Hold your shelf bracket against the wall to ensure your pencil marks align with the bracket's mounting holes.
- Level the bracket perfectly. Hold the mounting bracket against the wall, aligning it with your pencil marks and level line. Use a spirit level on top of the bracket bar to ensure it is perfectly horizontal before marking the screw hole locations on the wall.
- Drill pilot holes. Use a power drill with a bit slightly smaller than the shank of your mounting screws to drill into the studs. This prevents the wood from splitting when you drive the heavy-duty hardware in.
- Secure the brackets tight. Drive the mounting screws through the bracket holes and into the pilot holes. Tighten them firmly until the bracket is flush against the wall and shows no movement.
- Mount the shelf. Slide the shelf body onto the mounting rods until it sits snugly against the wall. Secure the shelf to the bracket using the provided small set screws underneath the shelf.
