Install Under Cabinet LED Strips

Kitchen lighting divides into two camps: the overhead floods that illuminate the whole room, and the task lighting that actually lets you see what you're chopping. Under cabinet LED strips fall squarely in the second category, turning shadowy counter zones into usable workspace. The installation itself takes an afternoon and requires no electrical license if you're plugging into an existing outlet. The result is a kitchen that feels twice as functional after dark, with clean light exactly where you need it and none of the heat buildup of old halogen pucks. The key decision is power routing. Plug-in systems offer the fastest install but leave a visible cord trailing to an outlet. Hardwired installations look cleaner but require basic electrical work and possibly a new switch. Most homeowners split the difference: plug-in for rentals or quick updates, hardwired when cabinets are already open during a larger renovation. Either way, the LED strips themselves mount identically, and modern adhesive backing holds strong enough that clips become optional insurance rather than structural necessity.

  1. Measure Before You Buy. Open cabinet doors and measure the front-to-back depth where the strip will mount, typically one to two inches from the front edge. Measure the total linear footage across all cabinets, noting any gaps at the stove or sink. Sketch which direction power will flow and mark the cabinet closest to your outlet or planned switch location.
  2. Grease Is the Enemy. Wipe the underside of cabinets with denatured alcohol or isopropyl rubbing alcohol to remove grease film and dust. Let dry completely. The adhesive backing on LED strips bonds permanently only to clean, dry surfaces, and kitchen cabinets accumulate a surprising layer of cooking oil vapor over time.
  3. Test First, Commit Later. Unroll your LED strips and lay them in position without removing the adhesive backing. Confirm the light direction faces downward toward the counter and that connectors reach between cabinet sections. Check that your power supply reaches its destination. Mark any spots where you'll need to cut strips to length using the designated cut lines printed every few inches.
  4. Stick and Press Firmly. Starting at the cabinet nearest your power connection, peel back two inches of adhesive backing and press the strip firmly to the underside of the cabinet, one inch from the front edge. Continue peeling and pressing in six-inch sections, keeping the strip straight and parallel to the cabinet front. Apply firm pressure for ten seconds at each section to activate the adhesive.
  5. Bridge the Gaps. At gaps between cabinets, use the connectors supplied with your kit or solder short jumper wires if your system requires it. Most modern strips use clip connectors that snap onto copper contact pads. Ensure polarity matches with positive to positive and negative to negative. Secure loose connector sections with small adhesive clips.
  6. Hide the Cord. Run the power cable along the back corner of cabinets toward your outlet or hardwire point. Use cable clips every twelve inches to keep the cord hidden and prevent sagging. If hardwiring to a switch, turn off power at the breaker, remove the switch plate, and connect low-voltage wires to the transformer according to its diagram.
  7. Clip for Longevity. Install small mounting clips at cabinet corners, near connectors, and anywhere the adhesive strip feels loose. These clips screw into the cabinet bottom with tiny screws and cradle the LED strip without blocking light output. Space them every eighteen inches on long runs over four feet.
  8. Light Up and Verify. Power on the system and check every section for consistent brightness and color. If using a dimmer or remote control, test all functions and program any presets. Walk around the kitchen at night to confirm light spread covers your main work zones without glare. Adjust strip position slightly if needed while adhesive is still repositionable in the first hour.
