Building Circular Tree Planters
Create circular planters around trees by marking a circle, digging a shallow border, installing edging material, and filling with mulch or plants while keeping the root flare exposed.
- Map Your Perfect Circle. Use a string tied to a stake at the tree base to mark your desired circle size. Keep the circle at least 3 feet from the trunk for mature trees. Walk around while holding the string taut and mark the ground with spray paint or flour.
- Excavate the Trench. Dig a trench along your marked circle about 4-6 inches deep and 6 inches wide. This will hold your edging material. Remove any grass and weeds completely, including roots.
- Secure Your Border. Place your chosen edging material in the trench. Brick, stone, metal edging, or plastic barriers all work well. Set pieces level and backfill soil around the outside to secure them in place.
- Amend With Care. Add 2-3 inches of quality topsoil inside the circle if needed. Mix in compost but avoid piling soil against the tree trunk. The root flare should remain visible at ground level.
- Fill and Finish. Plant shade-tolerant perennials, annuals, or ground cover, keeping plants at least 12 inches from the trunk. Alternatively, fill the entire area with 3-4 inches of organic mulch like wood chips or shredded bark.
- Establish Long-Term Health. Water the new planting area gently but thoroughly. Pull any weeds that emerge and refresh mulch annually. Avoid using fertilizers that might burn tree roots.
