How to Grow Sweet Potatoes in Raised Beds

Sweet potatoes thrive in raised beds with loose, well-draining soil heated to 65°F or warmer. Plant slips 12-18 inches apart after the last frost and harvest in 90-120 days when soil temperature drops below 55°F.

  1. Build Your Foundation First. Build or prepare a raised bed at least 8-10 inches deep with excellent drainage. Fill with a mixture of quality garden soil, compost, and coarse sand or perlite. Sweet potatoes need loose, well-draining soil that warms quickly in spring. The bed should receive 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
  2. Source Healthy Planting Stock. Order slips from a reputable supplier or grow your own by placing a sweet potato in a jar with the bottom half submerged in water. Keep in a warm, bright location for 4-6 weeks until shoots with roots develop. Carefully twist off 4-6 inch slips with roots attached.
  3. Check the Temperature First. Plant only when soil temperature reaches 65°F consistently, typically 2-4 weeks after your last expected frost. Cold soil will stunt growth or kill slips. Use a soil thermometer to check temperature at 4-inch depth in early morning.
  4. Get Slips in the Ground. Dig holes 4-6 inches deep and 12-18 inches apart in rows spaced 3-4 feet apart. Bury each slip so only the top leaves show above soil level. Firm soil gently around roots and water thoroughly immediately after planting.
  5. Keep Soil Consistently Moist. Water daily for the first week to help slips establish roots. After establishment, water deeply once or twice weekly, providing about 1 inch total per week. Reduce watering 3-4 weeks before harvest to prevent root cracking.
  6. Redirect Vines for Bigger Yields. Sweet potato vines spread extensively and may root at nodes along the stems. Lift and move vines every few weeks to prevent secondary root development, which reduces main tuber size. Allow vines to cascade over bed edges if space permits.
  7. Dig and Cure with Care. Harvest 90-120 days after planting or when soil temperature drops to 55°F. Dig carefully with a garden fork, starting 12 inches from the plant center. Brush off soil but don't wash. Cure in warm, humid conditions (85°F, 85% humidity) for 7-10 days, then store in cool, dry place.
